Agricultural University of Athens

The AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY OF ATHENS (AUA) was founded on 1920, with main objective to provide education and research in all fields of Agricultural Sciences. In CONOPS project, AUA participates with the research group of professor Serkos Haroutounian (Laboratory of Nutritional Physiology and Feeding, Faculty of Animal Sciences and Aquaculture).

Besides CONOPS project, the research team of AUA has participated –as coordinator- in the successful implementation of two additional LIFE environmental projects;

A. CALCHAS concerning the management of forests fires (LIFE08/ENV/GR/000558) B. DIONYSOS for the management-valorization of vinification wastes (LIFE03/ENV/GR/000223), which was awarded by the European Commission on 2008 as one of the five best environmental projects of EU http://ec.europa.eu/environment/life/publications/lifepublications/bestprojects/documents/bestenv08.pdf

Today, besides CONOPS project, the research team of AUA participates in the implementation of the climate change mitigation project LIFE CLIMATREE, which concerns the accounting and monitoring of carbon sequestration by tree crops (LIFE14/CCM/GR/000635). Finally, it must be pointed out that this research team was the accomplished the first total synthesis of natural product (+)-prosophylline (Tetrahedron Lett. 1999, 40, 6869).

Scientific areas that AUA research team is active concern the:

  • Exploitation of Natural Products: Isolation-valorization-uses of bioactive molecules from endemic Greek plants,

  • Environment: Management-valorization of byproducts and wastes of agricultural industries and processes

  • Quality and Certification of Agricultural Products: Study- characteristics determination and certification of traditional Greek agricultural products and foodstuffs

  • Application of Chemistry in Bio-medical Research: Treatment of osteoporosis and hormone-dependent gynecological cancers, control of angiogenesis
